Draaikolken en onderstroom

Onderweg van Harlingen varen we tussen het vaste land van Schotland en de Orkneys door. Daar stroomt de getijdestroom vanaf de Atlantische Oceaan de Noordzee binnen. Omdat het water hier zich tussen een passage van 4 mijl breed perst, kunnen er extreme stroomsnelheden voorkomen, draaikolken, onderstromen.

Omdat de stroomsnelheid hoger is dan de snelheid die de Wylde Swan kan behalen kunnen we alleen passeren met een west gaande stroming. Verder bereiden we ons goed voor. Het schip nog een keer extra goed zeevast maken, en we zetten een aantal parallele index lijnen op de kaart zodat we de radar kunnen gebruiken naast de GPS en visuele waarnemingen. Alle waterdichte deuren dicht.

Preparedness for sea

All vessels should be thoroughly prepared for sea and well secured before entering the Pentland Firth. A false sense of security should never be allowed to prevail as even relatively large vessels can sustain structural damage and loss of unsecured items stowed on deck when passing through Merry Men of Mey during a West going stream, the Swilkie during both streams a and Duncansbay race during the E-going stream”
